University is not the most important component of young person’s career, it has been asserted.

David Lammy, the minister for higher education, said that taking a degree is not necessarily the ideal starting block for every person and is certainly not the only choice they have to build their experience, reported the Guardian.

"The government has hugely increased the range of equally worthwhile opportunities for young people – 100,000 foundation degree places, 35,000 new advanced apprenticeships over the next two years and 104,000 new jobs," he told the newspaper.

Furthermore, Mr Lammy pointed out that getting into university is an increasingly competitive process, with two million people currently studying at the institutions across the country.

The minister’s comments follow those made by Dragon’s Den entrepreneur James Caan last week, as he told the Telegraph that holding a degree no longer means that a person will end up with the job they want.
